Supporting Communities to Achieve Food Security and Resilience

Access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food is a fundamental human need and a cornerstone of sustainable development. Across Somalia, many families continue to face food insecurity due to drought, climate change, displacement, poverty, and recurring humanitarian crises.

Somali Welfare Society (SWS) works to improve food security and strengthen community resilience by supporting vulnerable households, promoting sustainable food production, and enhancing community capacity to withstand shocks and emergencies.

Since its establishment in 1993, SWS has supported communities through food assistance initiatives, livelihood support programs, and resilience-building interventions that help families meet their nutritional and household needs.

Our Food Security Program

The Food Security Program aims to improve access to adequate and nutritious food while supporting sustainable solutions that strengthen household resilience and self-reliance.

The program focuses on immediate food needs during emergencies while promoting long-term approaches that improve food availability, access, utilization, and stability.

Key Areas of Intervention

Emergency Food Assistance

During humanitarian crises, droughts, floods, and displacement situations, SWS supports emergency food assistance programs that help vulnerable households meet their immediate food needs and reduce hunger.

Household Food Security Support

SWS works with communities to strengthen household food security through initiatives that improve access to food, enhance resilience, and support sustainable coping mechanisms.

Nutrition Awareness and Education

Good nutrition is essential for healthy communities. SWS promotes nutrition awareness and education initiatives that encourage healthy dietary practices and improve knowledge about nutrition and well-being.

Community Resilience Building

The organization supports resilience-building activities that help communities better withstand food insecurity, environmental challenges, and economic shocks.

Agricultural and Livelihood Support

Where appropriate, SWS supports activities that strengthen food production systems, improve livelihoods, and enhance community capacity to generate sustainable sources of food and income.

Support for Vulnerable Populations

Special attention is given to vulnerable groups, including children, women, elderly persons, displaced populations, and households facing severe food insecurity.
