Improving Lives Through Water, Sanitation and Hygiene

Access to safe water, adequate sanitation, and proper hygiene practices is fundamental to human health, dignity, and sustainable development. Across many communities in Somalia, limited access to clean water and sanitation services continues to affect health, livelihoods, education, and overall well-being.

Somali Welfare Society (SWS) works to improve access to safe water, strengthen sanitation services, and promote healthy hygiene practices among vulnerable communities. Through community-centered interventions, SWS supports sustainable solutions that improve public health, reduce water-related diseases, and strengthen resilience to environmental and humanitarian challenges.

Since its establishment in 1993, SWS has implemented and supported water and sanitation initiatives that contribute to healthier and more resilient communities.

Our WASH Program

The Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Program aims to improve access to safe drinking water, promote sanitation, and strengthen hygiene awareness across communities.

The program focuses on addressing immediate water needs while supporting long-term, sustainable solutions that improve community health and resilience.

Key Areas of Intervention

Water Supply and Access

SWS supports initiatives that improve access to safe and reliable water sources for households, schools, health facilities, and communities. Activities may include the development, rehabilitation, and improvement of water infrastructure that increases access to clean water.

Water Infrastructure Development

The organization contributes to the construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance of community water systems, water points, storage facilities, and related infrastructure that improve water availability and reliability.

Sanitation Improvement

SWS promotes improved sanitation through community awareness, sanitation facility support, and initiatives that encourage safe sanitation practices. Improved sanitation contributes significantly to reducing disease and improving public health outcomes.

Hygiene Promotion

Good hygiene practices are essential for preventing disease transmission and protecting community health. SWS conducts hygiene awareness campaigns and community education programs that encourage positive behavior change.

School and Community WASH Services

SWS supports efforts to improve water, sanitation, and hygiene services within schools and community institutions to create healthier learning and living environments.

Emergency WASH Response

During droughts, floods, displacement situations, and humanitarian emergencies, SWS supports emergency water and sanitation interventions that help protect vulnerable populations from health risks and disease outbreaks.
