SWS-supported classroom in Somalia
Our Story

Founded in crisis, built for the long term

Somali Welfare Society (SWS), is a non-governmental, non-profit, non-political humanitarian and development organization founded in 1994 in Puntland after the collapse of the Somali government. It was registered with the federal government on 9 April 2019 (Reg. No. 1102/NC/19).

Since inception, SWS has targeted vulnerable communities across Somalia women, children, and youth with programs in Puntland, Galmudug, Jubaland, Benadir, and Southwest State, and its main office in Garowe.

Vision: To be a leading organization in humanitarian aid, development, and empowerment programs in Somalia and beyond.

A Note From Our Executive Director

SWS was built in Somalia, by Somalis, for the communities hardest hit by drought, displacement, and conflict. We’ve stayed for more than 30 years because the need hasn’t gone away, and because staying is what turns emergency aid into lasting change.

This page is a record of that work: what we’ve built, who we’ve reached, and what still needs doing. If you’re looking for a partner with the local knowledge, the track record, and the presence on the ground to make your support count, let’s talk.

Led by a board, run by a professional team

SWS is led by a Board of Directors and a management team that runs daily operations. The Board sets strategic vision, mission, and priorities; the Executive Director is responsible for planning, designing, and implementing our programs, together with department managers who form the senior leadership team.

Our staff bring professional backgrounds spanning education, agriculture, livestock, fishery, civil engineering, finance and administration, ICT, logistics, human resources, development studies, monitoring and evaluation, peace building, and conflict resolution.
